While inflation may have peaked in much of the world it remains high, driven by rapidly rising food prices. Global average annual food inflation has doubled in the last year to around 15%. While oil and gas prices have dropped, helping reduce inflation from its peak, there is the risk that this broad-based inflation is ‘’stickier” and causing inflation to remain elevated for longer. If people expect higher prices, this can then feed through to higher wages and rising costs causing a self-sustaining loop. Come back later this year to find out how much progress has been made in the countries where you send assignees in defeating this bout of global inflation!
Use the interactive map below to find out more about how various factors affected indices in the countries where you have assignees. Simply choose a home location from the dropdown and learn more about how cost of living indices changed in the six months to March 2023. Exchange rate changes, inflation and index change indicators will vary depending on the home location selected and are based on ECA's default standard home-based index;they may change if different assumptions are used.

Post-survey developments
The information in this blog describes the changes up to the March 2023 Cost of Living Survey but in some countries circumstances can change quickly. That is why ECA carries out extra surveys for high inflation countries (see below) and publishes regular blogs on exchange rate changes around the world so you can be prepared for anything.

ECA's interim surveys
With inflation remaining stubbornly high in many countries it is essential to have up to date information. Fortunately for those managing assignees around the world, ECA surveys high inflation locations quarterly and in June will cover 21 countries.
We are currently undertaking interim surveys for the following countries due to high inflation expectations: Argentina, Burundi, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, Iran, Laos, Lebanon, Malawi, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Surinam, Turkey, Ukraine, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. The results will be available in July 2023.
