Dublin remains among the most liveable cities in the world

  • Retaining 9th position, Dublin continues to offer excellent quality of life for European expats
  • Copenhagen (Denmark) and Bern (Switzerland) occupy joint first place again this year as the most liveable cities in the world
  • Canadian cities Toronto and Vancouver remain most liveable non-European locations for European expats

Dublin has retained its place as ninth most liveable city and one of the most attractive cities in the world for European expats according to latest liveability data from global mobility experts, ECA International (ECA).

This is an encouraging result for the record-breaking number of Brits (900,000) that applied for Irish passports in 2019 with a view to maintaining EU-residency following Brexit.

The liveability of cities around the world is assessed annually by ECA based on a variety of factors including: availability of health services; housing and utilities; isolation; access to a social network and leisure facilities; infrastructure; climate; personal safety; political tensions and air quality.

ECA’s annual Location Ratings survey announced Dublin’s re-entry into the top 10 last year and has tracked the city’s steady rise in recent years as one of the most desirable cities for expats to live in Europe, and indeed, the world.

Like last year, Dublin shares joint ninth position with Gothenburg and Luxembourg City, offering the most superior living conditions for European expats.

Dublin also came in at 21st place for Asians expats, beating many Asian locations including Hong Kong, which is 93rd.

“Dublin has become a popular hub for the expats from around the world thanks to having the benefits of a large city while also managing to avoid the negative aspects. For example, crime rates and air quality are much better in the Irish capital than many other major European locations, while the culture and infrastructure scores remain strengths too” said Neil Ashman, Senior Location Ratings Analyst at ECA International, global mobility experts.

However, UK cities remain fairly low on the list as attractive options for European expats, with the exception of Edinburgh, which retains its position in joint 19th place with Stockholm, Sweden.

Ashman said “Pollution, crime rate and terrorism threats are among the factors that affect the liveability of major UK cities such as London, Manchester, Belfast and Glasgow. Europeans relocating for work or looking to move abroad can expect a good quality of life in many locations in Ireland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany or Norway; countries that dominate the top 20 of our rankings.”

ECA's Location Ratings system objectively evaluates a host of factors to form an assessment of the overall quality of living in over 490 locations worldwide. The system helps companies establish appropriate allowances to compensate employees for the adjustment required when going on international assignment. The impact of some of the factors assessed will vary according to the home location of the assignee.
